Miss Manners

I was working as a bank teller in upstate New York, where I'd recently moved from New England.

One day a customer pulled up to the drive-in window. The microphone was off, however, and I didn't know what he was saying.

I turned on the mike and, just to let him know that I hadn't heard him, said, "Please?"

To my embarrassment, the customer glared at me and said, "May I have a pen, PLEASE?
